The Masked Pokemon

A 'masked' Pokemon is basically an blurred, zoomed image of a Pokemon with clues to unlocking the masked Pokemon. Don't rely on the image to find out what Pokemon it is. The image is just something to get you off the ground; the clues are what you should focus your attention on. Of course, the clues are rather off-beat as well. Don't think this is easy! At the end of each month, the Pokemon will be revealed and there will be a new Pokemon.

Masked Pokemon of July, 2011

Image
Clues
  1. Sort of like Lickilicky.
  2. It shall never be not very effective... unless it's even less effective than not very effective, in which case it'll only be not very effective.
  3. Is that one or two?
  4. Darn the Japanese version for making me think this was something way more epic.

Please fill out ALL of the boxes. You may resubmit another answer if you change your mind later on, but please refrain from changing your mind TOO much. XD Do NOT submit many times under different usernames. I can tell who's doing it, based on the fact that I sometimes get 3 people who miraculously get the same answer within minutes of each other.

Pokemon:
Who you think the Masked Pokemon is.

Masked Archive

These are the past Masked Pokemon that Lugia's Island has had. Needless to say, you cannot submit answers for them because the answer has already been revealed. The winners are listed in the order that the e-mails came in: the first listed were the earliest and the last listed were the latest so I guess you can call the first three on the list first, second, and third place winners. There is also an explanation of the clues if you were curious about any of them.

There used to be images of each Masked Pokemon but unfortunately, they were lost so I had to remove them all. Sorry.

  1. The "middle child" of the bunch
Azelf is extremely offense, Uxie is extremely defensive, and Mesprit is just somewhere in the middle.
  2. I'm overcome with emotions
    Because it's the Emotion Pokemon.
  3. The games are very misleading; its true height and weight might surprise you
Alright, so the games were never a good reference to begin with, but I'd imagine it'd be bigger than one foot tall and weight more than less a pound. o_O
  4. Someone needs to give it a mean look
...And, annoyingly, the only one out of the three pixies that run.

Featured Comment
"At least they didn't call it Porygonz." --Greenumbreon
Clues
  1. Its Classification is rather ironic
I honestly forgot what I was thinking about here, but "Virtual Pokemon" seems perfectly fine to me. o_o;; I know I had something in mind for this clue, sorry. It wasn't it a trick though!
  2. What a hassle it is to make its prevolutions evolve to the final evolution
You have to trade twice and obtain two different, unique items in order to finally get a Porygon-Z. Sheesh.
  3. A STAB that it can finally use, thanks to the new system of categorizing Physical/Special moves
This refers to the wasted move Tri-Attack, which, in previous generations, was made useless because of it being a Normal type, and therefore a physical type, attack when the Porygon family is mainly centered around special type attacks.
  4. Probably popular among a bunch of gambling freaks
Porygon is always offered at those Gamecorner prize windows, so yeah.
  5. Why not 3?
    Porygon, Porygon2, Porygon3, maybe?

Winners
I kind of... well, lost them.
Clues
  1. Oddly has a lot of attacks that don't relate to it.
Gust? Bounce? Silver Wind? I would've never guessed.
  2. One of those Pokemon that has a double in each generation
    When I created this clue I was thinking of Goldeen and Seaking, but after a year, that's pretty much all I remember from the explanation that I planned. o_o;
  3. Rindo Berry
It holds a Rindo Berry in the wild.
  4. Preevolution is a proud owner of an escalating Pokedex number
    #456, Finneon

Answer
Mr. Mime
Winners (11)
Quanyails, Dibdab, PK Nouget, Sunset, Eminai, jeff, salamence200, orange tail, Spikefish, MMYM Bean, BN
Clues
  1. It doesn't exactly fulfill its role.
Mimes are supposed to be silent, and in the anime we see Mr. Mime talking like any other Pokemon. Also worht pointing out that he's also some kind of half-clown.
  2. It was always used in a certain type of team in the Advance generation.
This clue refers to Baton Passing teams, where 5 Pokemon Baton Pass stats to each other until it came down to a single recipient to sweep the game. Mr. Mime was a must on these kinds of teams.
  3. Used first by the fourth of five.
This clue refers to Lucian who used Mr. Mime first in his party, who is the fourth of the Elite 4 + Champion.
  4. Better than Solid Rock, I suppose.
This clue refers to Mr. Mime's ability, Filter, which halves the power of super-effective attacks instead of only weakening it, like Solid Rock does, which I'm assuming is much better (hence the "I suppose").

"Bidoof looks like a chipmunk and a racoon combined." --PhantomFang
Clues
  1. A major annoyance, according to most DP reviews
Just read the reviews (well, except for mine xD)... they're everywhere.
  2. Too bad others don't have as much "nerves of steel" when they look at it
This kind of corresponds with Clue 1. It's flavor text says that it has nerves of steel so nothing can annoy it, but it's the exact opposite when it comes it annoying others.
  3. Its abilities suggest that it is a very low-intelligence Pokemon
    "Simple" and "Unaware"... Yeah...
  4. 1 away from 400
Apparently the cause for the "OMG too easy!!!" comments that I received in the mail... it's the Pokedex number.

Clues
  1. A pokey version of the Sky Pillar
This clue refers to Dialga's location, the Spear Pillar. Sky Pillar... Spear Pillar... haha?
  2. It's white?
The Pokedex classifies as Dialga's color as "white", although I mostly see blue. I guess it's just one of those weird things in life, huh?
  3. The Eons
This clue is rather abstract and you could do without, really. Dialga/Palkia were kind of like Latias/Latios in the third generation.
  4. Celebi is my current competitor
So both of them can travel in time/rule time/fiddle around with time.
  5. It is not Latios/Latias.
This clue wasn't supposed to be here in the beginning, since this was 2 months long. But because of all the Lati@s answers I got, I decided to put this up.

Jirachi
Winners (11)
tayo23, Rubin, Gameboo19444, Hayden, Shiny Manaphy, Jason, derrick, Phoenixsong, cachumbo, Lucario, Shayne
Clues
  1. Such a harsh name for such a soft creature.
This clue refers to Jirachi's specialty move, Doom Desire. Honestly, DOOM DESIRE? Who ever expected such a tiny thing with round eyes that looks like its about to burst into tears to have such horrid desires?
  2. Poor Snorlax has a reputation for sleeping that he really didn't deserve.
According to Nintendo, Jirachi wakes once in 1000 years to make a wish, and Snorlax wakes up only once a month. That's pretty unbeatable. o_O
  3. *giftwraps*
Back in 2004, I think it was, when you preordered Pokemon Colusseum, you got a bonus disk with Jirachi as a gift.
  4. My special power isn't really special anymore considering all those that can do it..
This is referring to game mechanics, not the anime. Jirachi's specialty is Wish, yet at least 50 other Pokemon know it as well.
  5. Metagross, Metang, and Beldum
Jirachi shares the unique (or perhaps not so unique) Psychic/Steel combination with the Metagross family.

Magnemite
Winners (34)
Ryucorrupt, ~Piika, cachumbo, MTR, Wally4eva, Quanyails, j7695, pikaadvance, Swampsperts, Mew Twenty-Two, Orange, Gameboo19444, luigi hero of time, pika dude, Phoenixsong, Cookie, Suuweycoone, UmbreonX, tayo23, Swampertz, qwerty2263, Jade Dragonair, Eievui, bn123, Zaf, Redhead, hyperion707, Paperfairy, BlueUmbreon4, stormecho, Irilight, Sapphire, BlackChaosMew, Xdog8, tman1545
Clues
  1. Flying dish-pan thing two stops ahead of me!
This clue refers to Magneton's new evolution. Just look at it and you'll see what I mean by "flying dish-pan thing".
  2. Blaming ME for power outages?
In one anime episode, there was a blackout at a city caused by Grimer, but the blame was put on Magnemite instead.
  3. *attracts something 300 feet away*
According to Magnemite's flavor text, it can attract metal objects from 300 feet away. Not bad.
  4. Pikachu must hate me now
Again, this is referring to the anime. In the same episode, Magnemite's magnetic powers got Pikachu a bad fever.
  5. *joines in groups of 3* I wonder if someone will get tricked by this?
This one is pretty obvious. Magneton looks exactly like 3 Magnemites grouped together and I always thought it would be amusing to see 3 Magnemites stuck together in one.

Delibird
Winners (20)
Shiny Manaphy, porygonz, Wally4eva, MTR, tayo23, rubin, Homeskillet, Jirachi, WolfLUVA, Xatu, Ani, n/a, qwerty2263, spencer moonlight, Phoenixsong, Orange, Gameboo19444, wishmaster, ian
Clues
  1. Kill you or heal you?
Obviously, Delibird's signature move is Present and it can either heal some of the opponent's HP or blow a bomb in their face.
  2. The exact opposite of Mew
This clue wasn't exactly essential to figuring out the Masked Pokemon and it's really all based on opinion. Mew is known for knowing a bucket load of moves but Delibird can only learn Present naturally.
  3. The explorer sends his thanks!
This clue was referring to Delibird's Sapphire flavour text: There once was a famous explorer who managed to reach the peak of Mt. Everest thanks to one of these POKéMON sharing its food.
  4. I carry food... WE GET IT!
Just read all of Delibird's Pokedex entries and you'll see what I mean.
  5. Why the heck am I in this egg group?
Delibird is in the Ground egg group but yet it's a bird and it's related to snow, both of which has nothing to do about the earth.

Wartortle
Winners (7)
rubin, head of wingull club, Sam4566, qwerty2263, pity, battlepikeking, Tundrayen Tenshi
Clues
  1. Yay! I have ears now!
This one should be obvious: Squirtle doesn't have ears but Wartortle does.
  2. I can learn a special move... oh my. O_O
This clue was referring to the move Hydro Cannon, which only Wartortle's evolution, Blastoise, can learn.
  3. Kamer? x_x...
Kamer is Wartortle's Japanese name and I was like "What the...?" when I found that out.
  4. If only you can get more of me...
As always with all starter Pokemon, you can only get one Wartortle in the whole game besides, trading, hacking, or anything else of the sort.
  5. Stop pointing out signs of me aging!
...Just read Wartortle's flavour text; almost all of them say stuff like "Algae grows on its shell when it gets old" and "The tail becomes increasingly deeper in color as Wartortle ages."

Answer
Dragonite
Winners (4)
rubin, super sokka, *Silver Pheonix-Dragon, Nigel Deakin
Clues
  1. The 4 elements
This clue threw many people off, making them believe that it was Eevee since it is closely related to the elements. This clue actually meant that Dragonite is one of the few who can learn the 4 elemental attacks: Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Surf.
  2. It's all about flinching.
This clue was referring to Dragonite's ability: Inner Focus which prevents it from flinching.
  3. And to think I started out as my tail.
This was quite an obscure clue. "Started" meant that the Masked Pokemon had a pre-evolution and "tail" was referring to Dratini, who is just a snake-like thing and looks like Dragonite's tail.
  4. My classification makes me go 'duh'!
Dragonite's Pokemon classification is "Dragon Pokemon". Oh my, I would have never guessed. o_O
  5. Gosh, you just see this type combination too much...
"Combination" obviously meant that the Masked Pokemon had 2 types. Of course, about 80% of all Dragon Pokemon are also part flying and it's not exactly a thing to celebrate about, either since it makes it 4x weak to Ice type attacks.

Cacnea
Winners (20)
Rayquaza, Nightmare, Squall, Meechewl, none, coolmaster, Mudkip Man, Fiery Fun, higgledyaman, lucario36, Great Sage, Larissa, LegoJedi, Alego, Suuweycoone, a4kguy, Cucco_Cojiro, not any, rubin, dfg
Clues
  1. Becomes one of shadows when it moves on to the next stage.
This clue indicates that Cacnea has an evolution, and that it is part Dark or Ghost type.
  2. Releases a stench to attract prey.
If you look at this Pokemon's flavour text, the Ruby one says that "It releases a strong aroma from its flower to attract prey". This also might hint that the Pokemon was a grass type, since a lot of grass types use smell as a weapon.
  3. Of two egg groups; one being the Humanshape group.
This one was pretty straight forward...
  4. Rather small for being 113 pounds.
Again, this one is self explanatory and hints the Pokemon's size.
  5. 111
This is the one that confused most people. The '111' means that this Pokemon is found on Route 111. Anyone could have checked their Game Pak and immediately found out that it was the desert route, and only a few Pokemon live in the desert so it would have been pretty obvious. I decided to make it way less obvious and even unhelpful by only putting the route number.
